#30 Crash Course Sewing
Down and Dirty Sewing Machine Basics!
$30 class fee / 2 hours
for absolute beginners Want to learn to sew? This quick class will teach you what you need to get started! You’ll learn how to thread the machine, wind the bobbin, adjust tension, change needles, and troubleshoot. You’ll sew straight lines, turns and curves. Also, you’ll learn about sewing techniques like seam allowances, grain lines, pinning, and ironing for projects. After this class you’ll be set for any of our project based beginners classes. -Sewing Machines provided.

#101 Beginning & Beyond Level 101
Yes... you can make it yourself!
$140 class fee / 3 to 5 sessions
For beginners - returning seamsters - continuing learners
(Ages 18 to adult)

Come learn to sew or improve your skills in these hands-on “Beginners and Beyond” classes. Make a simple garment you’ll want to wear and take the guesswork out of sewing. Make a pair of pj bottoms, pants, or a skirt! You’ll learn how to read a pattern and select fabric; basic sewing and finishing techniques; and how to sew basic wardrobe garments. Enjoy a small class size and work at your own pace. It’s okay to repeat the class and work on different projects of your choice or to move on to other classes of your choice! Take one or take many!

#204 Open Sewing Session Labs
Bring your own project and get help from a pro!
4 hour session - $60
3 hour session - $45
Prerequisite: Basic sewing machine skills -
Ages 18+

Is there a class that you don’t see, a garment you want to make, or a simple home decorating project you’d like a hand with? Our Open Sewing Session Labs are designed just for you! Simply sign up for as many sessions as you need for your project. These classes offer the most flexibility and choice to help you sew, sew, sew! If you are stuck on a project, having fitting problems, want to learn specific techniques, need inspiration, need help with finishing or just want an experienced instructor at your side, sign up for a Lab! A perfect way to finish up a project started in another class. Focus on fitting, cutting, technique, tailoring, home-decoration projects - anything!! Small classes allow our instructors to support many different skill levels.

#202 Garment Construction Techniques
$140 class fee / 3 sessions
Prerequisite: Beginning Sewing 101 or equivalent experience
Seam finishing, hems, zippers, facings, pockets, darts, waistbands, buttons and buttonholes. These are the basic techniques you use over and over again in clothing construction. You will learn the steps that the pattern instructions omit, and gain deeper understanding of the skills you need to make high quality garments. The instructor will demonstrate technique, and then you will do it yourself in class. Because you'll have all your questions answered, knowledge of these techniques will stay with you!

Do you wander through NYC and become overwhelmed by all the amazing choices of fabric, patterns, buttons and other supplies? Then, this is the day for you! You’ll join me and shop while I teach you about textiles & notions.   I will guide you through the stores. We’ll talk briefly about style, color and fabric combinations, and then we’ll look through the store for fabrics, patterns and other supplies that will guarantee you success. I bring many years of experience as an instructor in image and color, plus her love of beautiful fabrics, to this event. No supplies are required, just bring your ideas, enthusiasm and pocketbooks and be ready to have fun! Space is Limited, so sign up soon!

 401 Hip-to-Sew Intro to Design
$50 class fee / 1 session
All levels welcome - bring your creativity and ideas!

Are you interested in fashion design? Are you inspired by Project Runway? This class will go over the basics of clothing design. We'll discuss flat sketching, the elements of design and how to bring your designs to life. Bring tracing paper, pencil, eraser, clear ruler, notebook and pen to class.
 
 #80 Easy Intro to Sewing: Make a Tote Bag!
$60 class fee / 4 hours
Beginner Level

Come give sewing a try! This one-session class introduces you to a sewing machine and the basics of using it. Work on a tote bag and learn how to use a sewing machine, measure and cut out your project. Come get excited about sewing! This class will help you figure out what features to look for in a sewing machine; different types of seams, skills such as turning, corners and, backstitching; and how to work with the bobbin. After this class jump into any of our Beginning Level (101 or 102), Easy Intro (80) and/or Apparel Open Sew Labs (204).

  • Adult education Nassau BOCES or Barry Tech. Tuesday & Thursday Fall and Winter 5 weeks each session beginner and advanced – sewing machines provided and all equipment provided– this takes place in an actual fashion design room
